Rex Lee Run

I got a haircut yesterday... but this isn't the best picture to tell from. This is after running my 5K. I'll put another picture up sometime when I've actually done my hair.

Today was the annual Rex Lee Run. Kelli, Christie, Sarah and I were all training for it for the last little while. When we woke up this morning though, Kelli was really sick and had all the symptoms of a viral infection... so Kelli went to the doctor while we ran the race. It was sad not having her there with us, I know that she was sad about missing it, and Sarah was sad about not having her running buddy.

We ran the 5K and were really excited when we crossed the finish line and found our time to be around 36 minutes. Christie and I had only ever gone 1.6 miles and it had taken around 25 minutes... so we were way pleased with our time.

One of the best parts of the run was the end... after we crossed the finish line and were waiting in the huge crowds of other finishers to have them take our timers off of us. We saw a bunch of parents pushing their kids in strollers, or older kids running alongside their parents. But... the best was a man that we saw pushing an older kid in a jogging stroller type thing. This kid looked about 10 years old, and was fighting cancer. Christie and I saw it, and almost cried... we had been complaining about running up a little hill, or wanting water, but then we realized how much we had to be grateful for.

Overall... it was a really neat experience and we decided that we'll be doing it again next year and every year that we're at BYU. Next year I won't be so cheap and I'll give an extra donation so I can get a certificate honoring Brother Halverson. It's hard to believe that it's almost been a year since that day in Seminary, or the funeral.

What a terrific way to honor Scott Halverson. Today at the Temple I learned that President & Sister Peterson have a 5-year-old granddaughter who is dying of cancer. She has a brain tumor, has had chemo and all, and has now gone home. Hospice is coming in to care for her, and she is essentially waiting until Monday when her grandpa and grandma are coming to say "Goodbye" to her. It is a very sad thing to think of someone so young having such HUGE struggles to face. Way to do your part to fight it, Marci.

I'm so proud of you Marci (in the most righteous way of being proud) for running in such a meaningful event. Great outlook and perspective.

On a more temporal note: I love the haircut, and congratulations on your timing - that jump from 25 minutes 1.6 to 36 for 5 is AMAZING!
