One of our goals for January was to get a membership at the YMCA. During January they were waiving the application fee, but then we ended up finding out that since we were signing up with a corporate discount through Chris's job we would have already had our application fee waived.
Since we were doing the corporate discount (which made it cheaper for all three of us to join than just for me and Emma) Chris had to be there in person when we applied. He had to bring his work badge so they could copy it. The next week they called his work to confirm that he is an active employee. They're legit! So one Saturday we got bundled up and headed to the Y. We got a tour of the place, asked some questions, then sat at the front and filled out a form. I scheduled an appointment to meet with one of their wellness consultants early the next week and then we headed home.
| Every time we go we scan both of our cards! Emma likes to help find them on my keyring. |
The first few days I went to work out Emma just cried and cried. She had a hard time adjusting to the childwatch there, but now she's doing better. Last time I went (it's been almost a week because she's got this nasty cough that keeps her out of childwatch) she didn't cry at all when we dropped her off. There are tons of toys, including a play kitchen (which REALLY makes me want to get her a kitchen of her own... but we just don't have the space for it [side note, I have already told Chris that when we buy a house Emma is getting a kitchen and he's on board]). I think every time we have gone there have been a bunch of kids from our ward there. That's one of the fun things at the Y -- friends!
I've been to 2 different group classes- Zumba and Group Functional Training. I absolutely loved Zumba and was really sad I couldn't go back to it this week because Emma was sick. Group Function was intense. We did some hardcore (for me) circuit training that I thought was going to kill me. I had a hard time walking for a day or two afterwards. It was hard, but I can tell it is going to help me get some good results. Hopefully I'll get to go again tomorrow. And then I've spent a few days doing strength training.
At my wellness consultation I had the first week I went they gave me a strength test and once they inputed that information along with what my goals are, how often I want to workout and some other questions I now have access to customized workouts. They have a little kiosk where I login and it will print a workout for me. When I'm done I go input that I did it and then the next time it will give me a different workout. I can also access the workouts from my phone--next time I won't forget my phone at home! Another part of the consultation was using this body composition analyzer that told me my weight, my body fat percentage, and a few other pieces of information. My goal is to lower my body fat percentage rather than focusing on what I weigh. According to my body fat percentage I am obese and I want to just get down to the normal range. I have a follow up appointment one month after my initial one, where they will use the analyzer again and we'll see what progress I was able to make in just one month. Hopefully Emma gets (and stays) healthier so I can go workout a bunch more before that appointment!
